NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, requires smoke alarms be replaced at least every 10 years, but because the public is generally unaware of this requirement, many homes likely have smoke alarms past their expiration date, putting people in increased risk in the event of a home fire.
"Smoke alarms play an essential role in in home fire safety, but they have to be working properly in order to protect people, " said Loraine Carli, vice president of NFPA's Outreach and Advocacy division.
Fire Prevention Week began as a result of the Great Chicago Fire on Oct. 9th 1871. Fifty years later President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation for the observance of National Fire Prevention Day. Since 1925, the President has signed a proclamation each year declaring the week of October 9th as National Fire Prevention Week.
HOW DO WE SPREAD THE WORD?
During Fire Prevention Week members of the Valley Center Fire Department travel to our public schools spreading the message of fire safety and prevention.
We hold an open house at the Fire Station between the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 10th thru Thursday, October 13th.
We encourage our citizens to come and get to know your local firefighters, tour the station, and ask us questions.
We have brochures for adults and for the children, snacks, fire helmets, and coloring books.
